Network Effects in the Web 2.0 Economy

In its simplest form, Network Effect refers to an environment where an increase in adoption or usage creates more value for all participants in a social community or network - this is referred to as positive Network Effect. The converse also holds true and is referred to as negative Network Effect. Negative network effect starts to occur when a network reaches an inflection point. There are several types of Network Effects: Direct Network effects, Indirect Network effects, Social Network effects, and N-sided market effects. Let's take a look at each type of network effect so we can understand why this concept is so important to today's business.A direct network effect occurs when the product or service value increase the more people use it. The classic example here is the fax machine. The first person who bought a fax machine rushed home, plugged it, and waited. As more people bought fax machines the more valuable the fax machine became. Indirect Network effect occurs when increases in the use of a product or services creates increased value for complementary products, resulting in added value to the original product or service. Microsoft Tries to Get Open Source

Here are some addition thoughts on Microsoft's Technology Summit (MTS07). I wanted to jot down some thoughts, what I learned, and what the role of Microsoft will be in the coming years for the evolution of the Web and open source. Some of the presenters deliberately brought Macs, including one who ran Vista under Parallels. Yet when someone asked if anyone had tested interop of Vista with Mac OS X, it was clear that this wasn't a focus. (And for those of us that have both, a continuing frustration.) For Microsoft to succeed, the Mac has to move from being a poster child OS, a necessary evil and some annoying relative to be tolerated to an actual strategic direction and integral to the company's success. The people that have moved to Mac desktops are canaries in the coal mine. They aren't happy with Windows for very real reasons (blue screen and security sinkholes come to mind). Linux Mint is a upcoming and popular distribution of Linux.
